How to Get Pikachu Early in Pokémon FireRed LeafGreen: Nintendo Switch

Publish Date: February 27, 2026

If you want Pikachu on your team early in Pokémon FireRed or LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch, you actually can get it before the first gym, you just have to know where to look. Pikachu is available very early in the game, but it’s a rare encounter.

Where to Find Pikachu Early in FireRed & LeafGreen

Pikachu can be found in Viridian Forest, which you pass through on your way to Pewter City and the first Gym Leader, Brock.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Leave Pallet Town and head north through Route 1.

  2. Pass through Viridian City.

  3. Enter Viridian Forest.

  4. Walk through the tall grass and search for Pikachu.

The catch? Pikachu only has about a 5% encounter rate in Viridian Forest. That means you may need to run into quite a few wild Pokémon before it appears.

It typically shows up at low levels (around Level 3–5), so be careful not to knock it out accidentally. Lower its HP and throw Poké Balls as usual.

If you’re planning to challenge Brock with Pikachu, keep in mind that Electric-type moves aren’t very effective against Rock-types. Still, having Pikachu early gives you a strong Electric option for the routes ahead — especially for Misty later on.

It may take patience, but you can absolutely start your Kanto journey with Pikachu.
