How to Get Dratini in Pokémon FireRed LeafGreen: Nintendo Switch

If you’re playing the Nintendo Switch release of Pokémon FireRed or LeafGreen and you want Dratini, you’re going to have to put in a little work. It’s not a normal overworld encounter, and you won’t just stumble into it by accident.

Where to Find Dratini in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen

To get Dratini, head to Fuchsia City and enter the Safari Zone. You’ll need the Super Rod to encounter it.

Here’s the step-by-step:

1. Reach Fuchsia City.

2. Enter the Safari Zone (costs 500 Pokédollars).

3. Make your way to one of the fishing areas — Area 3 is a common spot players use.

4. Use the Super Rod while standing near water.

Dratini appears as a rare Super Rod encounter, so expect to fish multiple times before seeing one.

Once you hook it, remember: Safari Zone rules apply. You can’t weaken it in battle. You’ll need to rely on Safari Balls, and Dratini has a tendency to flee. Most players simply throw balls immediately rather than using bait or rocks.

Save before entering the Safari Zone if you’re specifically hunting Dratini. You only get 500 steps per session.

It takes patience — but Dragonite is absolutely worth it.
