Haunter is one of those Pokémon that feels like it should evolve by level — but in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, that’s not how it works. If you’re playing the Nintendo Switch version and your Haunter keeps leveling up with no evolution screen, you’re not missing anything. The evolution trigger is not level-based.
Haunter evolves into Gengar only when it is traded to another player. The evolution happens automatically during the trade process.
That means:
No evolution stone
No held item
No specific level requirement
You simply initiate a trade, send Haunter to another player, and it will evolve mid-trade. After that, your trade partner can send Gengar back to you.
If you’re playing solo without access to trading, there is no alternative method in FireRed or LeafGreen. Haunter cannot evolve any other way in these versions.

Because of this, it’s smart to plan ahead. If Gengar is a core part of your team strategy, try to coordinate a trade partner before you reach the late game. Trade evolutions are a classic Gen 1 mechanic, and they’re fully preserved in the Switch release.
If you want Gengar, you’ll need a second player — that’s the only path forward in Kanto.
