Hello Trainers! Brock and Misty are two of the most iconic gym leaders and characters in the Pokémon franchise. Honestly, it wouldn’t be surprising if they were the most iconic. They are also the first obstacles players face on their journeys to becoming the Indigo League Champion. In this piece, we’re going to go over how to defeat Brock and Misty. Note: This piece is primarily for new players. Veterans will already have this knowledge in mind.
The gym leader of Pewter City is the first hurdle on the way to becoming a champion; Brock can be fairly easy or mildly challenging, but beating him will net players the Boulder Badge. As the name of the badge indicates, he specializes in Rock-Type Pokémon.
Brock’s team is comprised of two Pokémon, just like his Let’s GO match. They are Geodude and Onix. Their sets can be found below:

Geodude
Type: Rock/Ground
Gender: Male
Level: 12
Ability: Rock Head: A Pokémon with Rock Head will not take recoil damage
Moves: Tackle, Defense Curl
Onix (Ace)
Type: Rock/Ground
Gender: Male
Level: 14
Ability: Rock Head
Moves: Tackle, Harden, Bind, Rock Tomb
Key Points:
Geodude is not threatening because his set does not allow him to utilize Rock Head. As long as your Pokémon is at the right level, it will fall with ease; some players could take Geodude down underleveled. Onix is the main point of fear.
While not the most intimidating Pokémon down the line, Onix is a scary early-game boss Pokémon due to Rock Tomb being able to lower the player’s speed and having more than 2 moves accessible to it.
Luckily, Onix does not have anything to utilize Rock Head and no moves that can deal recoil damage (this avoids danger to himself, but also the player, as moves like Take Down deal a lot of damage).
Use Bulbasaur and Squirtle if they were chosen as starter Pokémon; Grass and Water-type Pokémon easily clear rock-type opponents.
Players who have Charmander as their starter of choice can teach it Metal Claw and use this to deal super effective damage to Onix, just make sure Charmander is at or above level 14 or already evolved into Charmeleon (level 16).
Training up a Mankey with fighting-type moves can serve as a secondary counter.
Misty is the gym leader of Cerulean City and the second hurdle on the way to becoming a champion. She is, for many players, significantly harder than Brock. Beating her will net players the Cascade Badge. She specializes in Water-Type Pokémon.
Misty’s team is comprised of two Pokémon, Staryu and Starmie. Their sets can be found below:
Staryu
Type: Water
Level: 18
Ability: Natural Cure: Heals upon switching out.
Moves: Tackle, Harden, Recover, Water Pulse
Starmie(Ace)
Type: Water/Psychic
Gender: Male
Level: 21
Ability: Natural Cure: Heals upon switching out.
Moves: Rapid Spin, Swift, Recover, Water Pulse
Key Points:
Misty has 1 Super Potion to heal a member of her team, luckily she is not guaranteed to use it on Starmie.
Starmie is the point of fear, and unlike Onix, it is a massive pain to fight. It is fast, has great special attack, and can hit hard if players are underleveled
Luckily, Misty’s Starmie does not have the most intimidating move set, but it does spam Recover mercilessly if players cannot deal enough damage.
Use Bulbasaur as Grass will heavily clean shop with Misty.
Players who have Charmeleon as a starter CAN use Dig to cheese Starmie or overlevel by defeating Blue and the Nugget Bridge trainers before taking on Misty. However, natures are unpredictable, so using Charmeleon is not advised.
Training up a Pikachu can help in this gym. Due to Pika’s frailty, though, overlevel by two or three numbers. Paralysis is your friend.
Brock and Misty are two of the most beloved gym leaders, but can also be pains in the pokedex. However, if players abide by these strategies or use them as a base, they will overcome. Good luck.
