Publish Date: February 26, 2026

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are making their way to modern consoles for the very first time. There will be new fans trying to find answers for the first time and old fans who need help remembering. Here is which Starter we believe is the Best in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Best Starter Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen Switch

When discussing the Best Starter Pokemon in FireRed & LeafGreen for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, there are a few things to consider.

Before getting too deep, Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle are all excellent choices and iconic for a reason. So make sure you keep that in mind moving forward.

1. Looks

The looks for each starter will mainly come down to preference. This can also be influenced by the final evolution of each of the starters. Do you want the Fire and Flying Charizard, the Flower Frog/Dinosaur Venusaur or the Turtle with two Cannons on its back Blastoise?

For many, the look for these Pokemon absolutely comes into play when picking.

2. Strength

The strength of each of these Pokemon is where things start to change. To keep things easy, we are going to give you a quick breakdown of each.

Charizard

  • Has the highest base stats at 534.
  • Is the most offensively strong Pokemon of the three.
  • Solid movepool.
    • Get Metal Claw along with Flying and Fire Moves.
  • Is Fire and Flying-type.

Venusaur

  • Has the lowest base stats at 525.
  • Is the most well-rounded Pokemon of the three.
  • Limited but strong movepool.
    • Gets all of the Grass moves along with Toxic and Earthquake.
  • Is Grass and Poison-type.

Blastoise

  • Has the middle base stats of the three at 530.
  • Is the most Defensive Pokemon of the three.
  • Has a surprisingly strong movepool.
    • All of the strong Water moves with some good Normal moves, Ice move, Earthquake, Iron Tail and more.
  • Is Grass and Poison-type.

3. Help with Beating the Game

Finally, there comes the question of which one helps you beat the game the easiest. Again, we will split this up.

Charizard

  • Good against the majority of the wild Pokemon in the game.
  • Is terrible against almost all of the Gym Leaders, Elite Four members and Rival battles.
  • Still is extremely strong but may need to be overleveled to do help you in big battles.

Venusaur

  • Struggles against many wild Pokemon that are not in caves or water.
  • Is excellent against the first three Gym Leaders, the eight Gym Leader and the first two Elite Four members. Struggles significantly in the Rival battles.
  • If setup well, Venusaur can be strong.

Blastoise

  • Struggles the most against many wild Pokemon that are not in caves.
  • Is strong against the first, seventh and eight Gym Leaders along with the second and fourth Elite Four members. Is easily the best for Rival battles.
  • For new players, Blastoise brings a good amount of bulk which can be helpful.

Final Decision

This comes down to Venusaur and Blastoise. Sorry Charizard.

For newer players who need time to get used to the game, Venusaur is an excellent choice. The fact that it is strong against four Gym Leaders and two Elite Four members is crazy. It also is bulkier than you think and has that strong movepool.

Blastoise is also a great choice but likely second to Venusaur just because it is not as strong in the early portion of the game. Once you hit the middle of the game, though, Blastoise gets incredibly strong. Considering it is helpful in six or so of the final 10 battles, really makes it hard not to pick it.

In truth, you can’t go wrong because, luckily, you can catch other Pokemon to roundout your team. All three fill different roles and truly were the ones that started it all. Enjoy Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2!
