If you’ve made it to the Safari Zone in the Nintendo Switch release of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, you’re officially in one of the most unique catching areas in the entire game. No traditional battles, no weakening Pokémon — just Safari Balls, bait, rocks, and a limited number of steps.
And yes, this is where some of the rarest Pokémon in Kanto are hiding.
Here are all the Pokémon you can encounter inside the Safari Zone in Pokemon LeafGreen and FireRed:
Common Encounters
Nidoran♀
Nidorina
Nidoran♂
Nidorino
Paras
Parasect
Venonat
Exeggcute
Rhyhorn
Fishing Encounters
Poliwag (Old Rod)
Goldeen (Good Rod)
Seaking (Super Rod)
Dratini (Super Rod – rare)
Rare & Version-Exclusive Encounters
Kangaskhan (very rare)
Tauros (very rare)
Pinsir (LeafGreen exclusive)
Scyther (FireRed exclusive)
Dratini, Kangaskhan, Tauros, Scyther, and Pinsir are usually the main targets for players, and they can take multiple attempts due to flee rates.
Pro tip: Avoid throwing rocks unless you’re desperate — it increases catch rate but dramatically increases flee chance. Bait lowers flee chance but also lowers catch rate. Most players simply throw Safari Balls and hope for the best.
And remember — you only get 500 steps per visit, so plan your routes carefully.
