Is Bubbly Basin Free? Free Update vs Paid DLC

The new Pokemon Pokopia expansion pass launches August 5 with the addition of the Bubbly Basin DLC. With this new expansion pass, there will also be a free content update teaching players a new move that’s paired with the Bubbly Basin DLC. On top of all that, the expansion pass itself is releasing in 3 parts over 3 different intervals to make matters even more confusing. This guide not only explains what’s included in the Bubbly Basin free update, but also what content is part of the free update vs paid DLC.

Is Bubbly Basin Free?

In short, broken up into 3 parts, part 1 of the new Pokemon Pokopia Expansion pass, Bubbly Basin, is NOT free. There is, however, a free software update that will be implemented the same day as the DLC’s release on August 5. The free DLC content update grants all players the special move Dive, which will be made available for them to learn. With the new and free move, players can freely traverse their new aquatic environments and build underwater if they wish to do so.  Regardless of whether the expansion pass is purchased, this move is available to ALL players.  While the ability will be free, players are still required to complete the quest “Raise the environment level” in Bleak Beach to learn the ability.

Pokopia Free Update vs Paid DLC

The only thing “Free” in this new Pokopia update is the new ability Dive, as mentioned previously. Paying for the expansion pass grants access to the new underwater biome Bubbly Basin, which houses new outfits, mechanics, and Pokemon. Some of which even include Watermelons, Buyant Blocks, bubble machines, and more!

Part 2 of the expansion pass won’t be available until sometime in 2026, but it promises dressing up alongside other Pokemon by wearing accessories, additional furniture pieces, and, of course, additional new Pokemon. Part 3 will have a whole new town, among other features, to explore, but it won’t be available until sometime in 2027.

On top of purchasing the new Pokemon Pokopia Expansion Pass, players can claim 2 bonus rewards. Those rewards are Ditto print blocks and wallpaper. Anyone who makes the decision to purchase Pokopia Bubbly Basin by Tuesday, August 31, 2027, will receive a code for 30 rare Pokemetal ingots. This code will be sent via email and can be redeemed via the Mystery Gifts feature in-game.
