Is Pokemon Champions going to be pay to win or is everybody overreacting? Let’s take a look at the different prices and what they actually get players.
This standalone game offers multiple ways to play. Players can go fully free-to-play or spend money on different systems within the game. Because of that, there has been a lot of discussion about whether paid players will have a competitive advantage.

Before determining if Pokemon Champions is pay to win, it is important to understand how the pricing system works and what players receive from each option.
The starter pack costs $7 USD and is a one-time purchase. It provides early resources that help players obtain and train Pokemon more quickly.
Pokemon Champions will include a battle pass system similar to other live-service games. While the exact duration is not fully confirmed, early indications suggest seasons may last around 31 days, though this could change based on the competitive schedule.
Players can earn rewards simply by playing, but premium battle pass users will unlock additional rewards.
There is also an annual membership priced at $50. This provides long-term bonuses and additional features that expand gameplay options.
One major concern is how Pokemon HOME integration will impact competitive balance. Players can transfer Pokemon from other games into Pokemon Champions and back.
At the same time, the in-game system allows players to choose one free Pokemon per day from a pool of 10 options. Additional Pokemon can be unlocked using VP (Victory Points), the game’s primary currency.
This raises an important question: will transferring Pokemon cost VP, or will it be free? If it is free, players who already own games like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet or future titles like Winds and Waves may have an advantage by importing stronger Pokemon immediately.

The daily rotation system introduces randomness. With only 10 Pokemon available each day, players may not always have access to key meta picks.
If a top-tier Pokemon like Incineroar is not available and a player does not already own it through other games or VP purchases, it could limit their competitive options.
This creates a core issue:
VP cannot be purchased directly. Instead, it is earned through gameplay or indirectly through paid systems like battle passes and memberships.
The battle pass system follows a familiar structure. Players earn Season Points through ranked battles and progress through reward tiers.
Some rewards are free, while others require the premium battle pass.
The premium battle pass costs $10 and unlocks additional rewards, including Pokemon, Mega Stones and cosmetic items.
Players can earn Pokemon like Emboar and key items such as Mega Stones, which are central to the game’s mechanics. However, some of these rewards are locked behind the premium track.
VP is also required for adjusting Pokemon builds, including moves, stats, abilities and natures. This makes VP a critical resource for competitive play.
The starter pack provides immediate advantages by allowing players to unlock multiple Pokemon early and gain additional training resources.
This speeds up team building compared to free-to-play progression.
The membership increases Pokemon storage, expands the number of available battle teams and unlocks exclusive missions that reward additional VP.
These features improve flexibility and progression speed, especially for competitive players.
Players can effectively accelerate progress by spending money. Paid systems allow faster access to Pokemon, Mega Stones and VP.
Free-to-play players can still earn these resources, but at a slower rate and with more limitations.
If a specific Pokemon or Mega evolution becomes meta-relevant, players without access to it may fall behind. This is especially impactful early on when the meta is still developing.
While free players can compete, the gap in access and flexibility may create a noticeable advantage for paying players.
This system could improve depending on how it evolves. If additional ways to earn Pokemon and VP are introduced, the gap between free and paid players may shrink.
Making VP easier to obtain or expanding access to key competitive resources would significantly improve balance.
Until then, the system raises valid concerns about competitive fairness.
