Christian Hackenberg was released by the Philadelphia Eagles today
This comes after yesterday’s terrible performance in the preseason finale. His release is not surprising and barring an incredible performance Hackenberg would never have made the Eagles’ roster, however, he could have shown other teams enough to give him a shot in their less deep quarterback rooms. All in all, nothing was ever really expected to come from Hackenberg signing with the Eagles and nothing has. The Eagles already have a defined top three quarterbacks and Hackenberg really amounted to nothing more than a camp arm for the preseason.
The most disappointing part is that with a quality performance Hackenberg could have changed the script on himself and earned his way onto a team through waivers. As it stands, Hackenberg finished yesterday’s game with seven completions on 16 attempts with two interceptions and a fumble. That’s not much to inspire confidence in his abilities as a quarterback in the NFL. On the positive side, the former Penn State Nittany Lion did show good mobility rushing for 66 yards.
Alshon Jeffery is activated off PUP
Jeffery being taken off of the PUP is a good sign in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. Jeffery is still expected to miss the first two games of the season. However, this is a large improvement from speculation that Jeffery would start the season on the PUP list and be ineligible to play for six weeks. In addition, Jeffery’s early return should help to bolster the Eagles’ offense that could start the season off a little rusty with Wentz returning from a torn ACL.
