After a dramatic finish at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, Rickie Fowler is a champion again. The 34-year-old put together a bogey-free final round on the way to his sixth PGA Tour victory. Fowler earned a spot in the three-man playoff thanks to a clutch birdie on hole 18.
The playoff was over just as quickly as it started. Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa went head-to-head with Fowler in just one extra hole. Rickie Fowler drained his 12-foot birdie putt and secured his first trophy in four years.
A 24-under 264 plus his playoff hole birdie have earned Rickie a $1,584,000 share of the purse.
Rickie Fowler’s previous win came on Super Bowl Sunday in 2019. Since then he has become a husband, a father and now a PGA Tour champion once again.
The PGA Tour shared Rickie’s triumph on Twitter.
Taylor Moore and Peter Kuest got off to strong starts after shooting 8-under par in round one. Despite putting together decent tournaments, the duo stalled and finished tied for fourth place with Lucas Glover.
Tournament champion Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover and Carl Yuan all notched scores of 8-under par in the third round as well. Despite their efforts, Adam Hadwin stole the show in the third round after he shot a tournament-high 9-under par. Andrew Landry recorded a 9-under par in round two and Stephan Jaeger matched this score in the final round.
The cut line was posted at 3-under. This cut ended up benching many big names for the weekend, including defending champion Tony Finau. Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas and Tom Kim also missed the cut.
During the final round of the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, Max Homa made headlines. Homa entered the final round with a score of 10-under par. Despite being out of contention, he still made his mark. The ninth-ranked golfer in the world nailed the only ace of the tournament. This hole-in-one came from 140 yards out on the par-3 fifteenth hole.
The next tournament on the PGA Tour is the John Deere Classic. This event will be hosted at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois and features a $7.4 million purse. The 2022 John Deere Classic was won by J.T. Poston who shot a 21-under 263.
Emiliano Grillo and Christiaan Bezuidenhout tied for second place after they recorded an 18-under 266. TPC Deere Run is a par-71 track that has been known to give up a high number of birdies. This season, another exciting finish is very likely.
