McIlroy Takes Tour Champ. and FedEx Cup

On a day where my heart was filled with so much glee from the four playoff holes the world was treated to, my heart remains heavy for a legend in the game of golf has died. My thoughts and prayers go to Arnold Palmer’s family and loved ones. The King will be missed.

The Tour Championship concluded today in an other-worldly fashion. Kevin Chappell, Ryan Moore and the newest FedEx Cup Champion, Rory McIlroy finished 72 holes at 12-under-par, leading to a three-man playoff that would get whittled down to a two-man after Chappell’s par didn’t tie Moore’s and McIlroy’s birdies. McIlroy and Moore would duke it out for three more holes until McIlroy emerged victorious with this putt.

McIlory wasn’t even supposed to be in the playoff in the first place being three strokes back with three holes left to play, but a hole out for eagle on the 16^th hole put him one back with two to play. Naturally, McIlroy waited until the 18^th hole to push his drive right into the deep rough, hit a 3-wood from that rough into a bunker, and then chip out of that bunker onto the green and leave himself with less than two feet for birdie.

The win at the Tour Championship for McIlory means that he’ll not only take home that trophy, the FedEx Cup trophy as well, but that also means that he knocked Dustin Johnson from his No. 1 spot in the rankings to No. 2. The advantage was on Johnson’s side as well, if either Moore or Chappell had hung on to win the Tour Championship, he would have been hoisting the Cup above his head, but McIlroy’s two well-timed wins in the last three weeks put him on top.

That concludes the 2015-2016 PGA Tour Season, but golf isn’t done quite yet. Next week the United States and Europe compete at Hazeltine National Golf Club for the Ryder cup where two teams of golf’s best will duke it out to see who reigns supreme.
