When Will Overwatch 2 Come Out?

Publish Date: August 12, 2021

Overwatch 2 was officially unveiled during Blizzcon 2019 and has sense provided fans with little to be excited about, as players of the original game have received little to no new content since. That saga continues to worsen as recent rumors and leaks have brought some concerning things to light about the game’s tentative release date.

OW2 News

I’ve heard from multiple people close to my original source with OW2 that the development is taking longer than expected. From what I can gather a release in 2022 does not seem likely anymore. I hope this is false and I’m proven wrong.

Worrying News

This leak, coming from a streamer named Metro, may have some validity. Metro has leaked things in the past, such as the initial news surrounding Overwatch 2, and several releases of heroes. For the most part, he has a proven track record of being correct via his sources.

Fans certainly hope that is not the case, as he claims that Overwatch 2 will likely be released in 2023, three years later than the 2019 Blizzcon claimed it would. Three years. In that time, the developer has gone through a massive transition, a global pandemic, and a terrible sexual scandal that has ripped the company apart yeat again. Through all of that, it looks like the players, just like many of the employees involved, will be the ones paying the price.

It’s really not practical to respond to every rumor about our future plans, but in this case this story is inaccurate. We have not set nor communicated dates about our 2022 season yet but do not plan to take a ‘year-long hiatus’ in any scenario we are considering currently. https://t.co/hDJwN2szb5

This also comes alongside some concerning rumors that the OWL will face a delay post-season to better sync with the launch of Overwatch 2. The league’s VP, Jon Spector, contended those claims but did not seem to outright deny the existence of some break. This, again, is concerning when lined up with Metro’s leak.

Official News on the Way, Hopefully

The sequel to Overwatch has now been confirmed to contain a PvE mode with in-game items, new maps, and even a new map type called “Push.” That much, along with Sojourn as a confirmed new hero, fans and players can be excited about. However, with the recent issues at Activision Blizzard and this possible 2023 delay, things are admittedly bleak for the future of the Overwatch franchise.

The claims from Metro are still just to be considered as leaks and non-definitive, as Activision Blizzard has released nothing official yet on the subject. TGH will continue to provide news and updates as they are made available.
