With all of that in mind, here is everything that is known thus far about Overwatch 2’s release date and when fans can expect to grab the new game.
In the initial ESPN report, it was noted that fans would be able to play the new map and new game mode at Blizzcon this weekend. If this is the case and these are major components exclusive to Overwatch 2 that are already playable, the game would be thought to be potentially near completion, at least for a beta. However, that was shown not to be the case.
At Blizzcon, Jeff Kaplan claimed that he “does not know” when Overwatch 2 would be released, urging fans to wait and embrace the fact that they intend to make the new game great. But, according to ESPN, it appears Overwatch 2 will not come out before the OWL 2020 season, meaning fans can expect a release date of Fall 2020 if the report is in fact true.
With all of this in mind, the game should be set for release sometime in the 2020 calendar year. The exact date of release, however, is dependant on several different variables. Namely, it depends on how far along development of the skill tree and in-game items are, if the game will run on an entirely new engine vs being a downloadable next chapter for Overwatch 1, as well as when Blizzard want to release it, simply.
This is also in-line with an Overwatch player who has confirmed several leaks in the past, their tweet displayed below.
OW 2 is planned for release in 2020, it won’t be out right after Blizzcon.

Official News on the Way
Personally, this author believes the game will most likely come out sometime around the game’s 4th-anniversary event, which would be sometime around May or June of 2020. This would make sense as a spot to celebrate the game’s history and take a step forward at a fitting time. But, at the end of the day, fans alike will just have to wait and see what Blizzard says and if any new reports surface.
