Season 5 of the Overwatch League Set to Start May 5

Bryan RockwoodBy Bryan RockwoodFebruary 15, 20222 Mins Read

In a brand new Community Update from the Overwatch League, fans got answers for some of their most pressure questions. Soe Gschwind, Matt Morella, and head of OWL Sean Miller gave audiences a quick run down of what is to be expected for the fifth season of the Overwatch League. The group kicked things off with the most important update of all – the OWL start date.

Overwatch League fans can get excited now that the league will be back starting May 5. The new start date is the latest the league has started, and is a month delayed from the earlier expected start date of April.

    Season 5

The newest season of OWL comes the biggest change of all. Season 5 of the Overwatch League will be played on Overwatch 2. The league announced this change a few months ago, and it appears as though the delayed start date only means that teams will have more time to practice on the eary versin of OW2.

    New Tournament Structure

Also coming into the league is a new, semi-familiar, season format. Like in 2021, the Overwatch League will host four separate tournaments throughout the year. The small wrinkle in this years set of tournaments is that the first and third tournaments will be regional, while the Midseason Madness and the final playoffs will be international.

The last main bullet point from the Community Update is the plan to bring back in-person events. LAN matches were some of the biggest events in the Overwatch League in the past, and it is one of major losses from the pivot to fully online play due to the global pandemic. It is unclear how the league plans on handling safety measures to ensure the players remain safe and healthy after the event. It is worth noting that the Call of Duty League has had hosted a LAN already this season, and Overwatch may look to borrow their procedures for when OWL comes back to the stage.
