Ranking the Best Tank Heroes in Overwatch’s Latest Patch

new sigma skin

Overwatch’s latest patch (1.43) has just gone live and has shaken up the meta for heroes in each of the three roles, which affects heroes all across the game. For example, at support, heroes like Moira received a nerf to her overall healing. This not only hurts her moving forward, but can also hurt tanks which rely on her consistent healing output to survive in the fray.

Because each change in this patch affects so many different heroes, we have broken down which are currently the best in their role. Hopefully, this more detailed guide of each role can help players better operate in the current meta and win more games. For a more general look at all the heroes in the game, be sure to check out our January 2019 Overwatch Tier List.

The Best Tank Hero

Outside of Baptiste, there is no character in Overwatch that is more of a must-pick right now than Orisa. Her nerfed shields were compensated by developers with buffs to her fortify and her overall amount of personal shields, making her insanely tough to take down even after her shield is busted.

Outside of her personal kit, she also meshes very well with Baptiste and Mei, the other top characters at their role. Baptiste’s bunker-style defense and Mei’s utility, paired with Orisa’s high damage output and survivability, make those three a handful to deal with together.

Other top Tanks

Wrecking Ball

There are more tanks in this section because, frankly, most every tank is strong in the present meta. One could argue it is the most overpowered role in the game right now, making it hard to say very many options are poor ones.

This is true because there are two options in the meta for tanks: barriers and dive. For barrier tanks, Orisa is a must-pick and both Reinhardt and Sigma are viable options depending on the map type. The same can be said for Roadhog. Dive tanks, as it stands, favor Wrecking Ball and Winston due to their superior damage output.

Sub-Optimal Options

These two heroes are not bad at the moment, just not as dominant as others currently in the meta. D.Va can still find utility in dive and Zarya can still be useful alongside a Reinhardt or Sigma. However, the meta currently favors tanks with more to offer than these two, making them the least favorable options at tank in Patch 1.43.

Overall, there are still situations in which each of these supports can be played, this list is simply meant to rank how they fair in the current meta. To learn more about the state of Overwatch’s other roles, check out our support and DPS rankings.
