Overwatch World Cup: Recap of Incheon Qualifiers

Connor KnudsenBy Connor KnudsenAugust 21, 20183 Mins Read

The Overwatch World Cup started off with a bang this past week with the Incheon qualifiers. If you’re like me and slept through several of these games, here is a brief recap of what you missed from the weekend.

Finland and South Korea Advance

South Korea went a perfect 5-0 in their matches over the weekend. Over this span, they only lost two of the 18 maps that they played. Finland was the team that took those two maps from SK. If you haven’t watched that match, you can do so here. It was arguably one of the best Overwatch matches to be played thus far, even with the technical issues that will forever haunt its legacy.

Outside of that match, Finland and South Korea were both clearly the two best teams in the region and deserve their spot at Blizzcon. We will have to wait and see if South Korea will continue to dominate as they have in past years, or if a challenger will emerge that can end their dynasty.

Promise for Some, Heartbreak for Others

Russia and Japan showed a great deal of skill in several of their matches. Japan’s DPS core of Dep and ta1yo are something that the team can build from as they look to improve on their 2-3 finish this year. Russia, on the other hand, may be disappointed despite their 3-2 finish. They had Finland down 1-0 in a match that essentially decided who advanced to Blizzcon, and they just couldn’t finish it. This is a good team that did not get the result they were looking for.

Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei will have even less to be excited about after a cumulative 1-9 finish. However, the exposure that this tournament provides for the players is a positive and they will always remember the experience of playing in a World Cup. No one can take that from them.

Stay Tuned

Be sure to keep up with the Overwatch World Cup, which resumes on September 7th at 10 PM PDT. USA and Canada will be looking to capture this group stage, while Brazil, Switzerland, Austria and Norway will look to play spoiler. You can watch these on the PlayOverwatch twitch feed, and VOD’s are available on the OWWC website.
