Overwatch PVP will be 5v5 in Overwatch 2

Publish Date: May 20, 2021

During the Livestream of Overwatch 2, it was confirmed that the new game would be 5v5 instead of 6v6 as Overwatch is now. This was stated at the very beginning by new director Aaron Keller and he alluded to why they made this decision. Here is a look at what was stated about Overwatch 2 5v5 in the Livestream.

Many were wondering if there would be a role that would be hurt by this 5v5 decision if it were implemented. It was confirmed by Lead Hero Designer Geoff Goodman that tanks would be getting the ax. Now it will be two supports, two dps and only one tank.

To make up for this they will be making sure that tanks are much beefier. In the example, they stated how important it was to also confirm that healers wouldn’t just be able to make the one tank incredibly hard to kill. They had tried many different formats before settling on this. That includes a 4v4 format or 7v7.

It will be interesting to see how the Overwatch League reacts to this change. With the loss of the extra tank position, there is no doubt that players will, unfortunately, be out of jobs. It is assumed that the flex tank may be the official position that is lost but this has not been confirmed.

Now it will be interesting to see how the community reacts. There is no doubt that 6v6 was a fundamental part of Overwatch. It seems as if there hope is that it will make the game easier to watch and play.
