With Grand Finals on the way, the Overwatch League has officially announced their full rosters for not one, but two All Stars weekend. Split into regions, Asia and North America, the players fans chose to participate will go head to head in a list of battles. These include favorite classics like the Widowmaker 1v1 tournament and the 6v6 All Star game. New events have been added this year as well, like the Genji, Winston and Ana skills challenge. With prize money on the line, these players are in for round after round of fun and spontaneity.
How The Games Work Per Region
Since the League has been divided into two regions for most of this year, the All Stars games are proceeding accordingly. First, the Asian Region All Stars events will begin on September 29th. Scheduled to begin at 1-7 a.m. PT (or 4-10 p.m. CST, and 5-11 p.m. KST) the region will go through their own All Stars festivities. This includes a standard 6v6 All Stars game, from which the two chosen coaches will draft their teams and allow players to choose their own role (outside of standard role lock).
The event will then move on to the famed Widowmaker 1v1 tourney, in which players take turns in a shoot out until only one remains. Reigning champion Min-sung “Diem” Bae of the Shanghai Dragons returns to hold his honor. He’ll be competing against some of the best in Jae-Hyeok “Carpe” Lee of the Philadelphia Fusion, Jung-woo “Happy” Lee of the Guangzhou Charge, and Seon-Chang “ANS” Lee of the San Francisco Shock.
New Talent Takedown Allows Asia To Shine
A new and exciting chance for worldwide Overwatch League fans is the Talent Takedown. While NA fans are used to seeing people like Brennon “Bren” Hook and Mitch “Uber” Leslie duke it out, other fans will now get the same treat. With local Asian talent, the stage is set for the Talent Takedown! With Chinese and South Korean talent coming together, a new Talent Takedown is ready to unfold. Listed below are the participating talents from China and South Korea. (Yes, Overwatch League fans, that is ryujehong!)
China Talent
- Chuyin “Vivi” Huang
- Jiaming “Jiuduo” He
- Mengyuan “Peach” Wang
- Zhihao “YXL” Zhang
- Yuanyi “Roy” Liu
- Yutao “Time” Bian
South Korea Talent
- Kyu-Hyung “Yongbongtang” Hwang
- Hyun-Sung Hong
- Je-Hong “Ryujehong” Ryu
- Ji-Su “Akaros” Jang
- Ji-Soo Sim
- Jung-Min “TheMarine” Kim
Additionally, the four new modes added into All Stars will be Asian Region exclusive. This includes the Ana, Genji, and Winston skills challenge, in which four players who excel at these heroes get to show their stuff. The last mode, entitled “Who Is Meta?”, functions as a Hero Gauntlet. With each chosen player having the potential to complete the “Fleta Deadlift”, eight chosen players will face each other to see who comes out on top. Starting as McCree, they’ll cycle through heroes as they get eliminations, leaving room for only one at the top.
What About North America?
Never fear, fans. After all this fun is said and done, the League gets to do it again. On October 3rd, starting at 12-4 p.m. PT (3-7 a.m. CST (+1), or 4-8 a.m. KST (+1)), the best of the best in the North American region get their shot. Following the same draft rules as the Asian region, it’ll be an all out brawl, with the rules of the game changing as the maps progress.
The NA region will also get to participate in the Widowmaker 1v1, as well as the Talent Takedown. With the metas set for the Talent Takedown, including a map that reverts back to GOATs (ah, 2019), fans will certainly get a treat of the faces they’ve come to love go head to head. Additionally, with more former professional players than ever — notably Scott “Custa” Kennedy and Jacob “Jake” Lyon — these games could be more competitive than ever before.
Full lists of all players involved can be found on the Overwatch League website, including details about each round and each mode. Tune into the first bout of All Stars matches on September 29th, and make sure to prepare for the Grand Finals on October 8th.
