Overwatch January Tier List 2022: A New Patch, And an Old Friend

Publish Date: January 12, 2022

Overwatch players are in disbelief. Just when all hope was lost, Blizzard surprised everyone with a sudden patch on January 6. This patch marks the first in 2022, and the first one since August. There are once again meaningful changes made to Overwatch. The one problem –  the majority of the changes came from the recent Experimental Patch. The adjustments that Blizzard made are generally mild, but the one major changed awarded Hanzo a massive buff. The overall meta hasn’t been shaken up too much, but players should be ready to see plenty of the bow-and-arrow hero in the competitive queue. Here is the 2022 Overwatch January Tier List.

[Last Month: December 2021]

Tier 1: Optimal Heroes with High Win Rates and Synergy

  • Baptiste
  • Brigitte
  • D.Va
  • Echo
  • Hanzo
  • Lucio
  • Mei
  • Orisa
  • Sigma
  • Tracer

Everyone, please welcome back Scatter Arrow!

Why Blizzard decided to bring back one of the least rewarding abilities in the game is still unknown. While it is not actually Scatter Arrow, Hanzo now possesses the spiritual successor built into his Storm Arrows ability. Arrows will now ricochet off of walls when Hanzo activates Storm Arrows. Hanzo was already a solid choice at the DPS position and yet they decide to push him over the edge. Funny enough, Storm Arrows was actually bugged on the first attempt to implement the patch and could shoot through enemy shields. That patch was reverted within the hour. Now Hanzo still sits at the top of the tier list this month and tank players are less than excited.

Tier 2: Good Alternatives to Tier 1 and Still Viable Overall
  • Ana
  • Ashe
  • Cassidy
  • Junkrat
  • Mercy
  • Moira
  • Pharah
  • Reaper
  • Reinhardt
  • Soldier: 76
  • Torbjorn
  • Winston
  • Wrecking Ball
  • Zarya
  • Zenyatta

It might be shocking to see Reinhardt still up this high on the tier list after the buff to Hanzo, but luckily the fan-favorite tank received some buffs of his own. Earthshatter now deals more damage where the hammer hits down. It is a small tweak to Rein’s ultimate that should prove to give players a bit more firepower in the front line. However just like Hanzo, Reinhardt’s Earthshatter was bugged on the first iteration of the patch. Rein could stun the opposing Rein through his shield, if they had landed the ultimate on the shield. It was weird, but luckily that too has been fixed.
In other news, Cassidy and Moira can fly now. How rad is that?

Tier 3: Good Situational Picks but Less Strong Overall

  • Doomfist
  • Genji
  • Roadhog
  • Sombra
  • Symmetra
  • Widowmaker

Roadhog is an interesting pick after the recent changes. The combination of Hanzo’s shield-break potential and Roadhog’s hook can create opportunities for hugely important picks at the start of the fight. The only downside is that the opposition is most likely running a similar comp. Both Hanzo’s will build their ultimates insanely fast as they will surely pepper the Roadhog with arrows off of cooldown.

Unfortunately none of the characters down here received the elusive buff. But then again none of them received a direct nerf either.

Tier 4: Difficult to Have Success Within the Current Meta

  • Bastion

Sad robot noises. Bastion sucks, Blizzard please address this poor, poor character.
