Overwatch 2 developers have made significant changes to the game’s leaderboard, previously announcing a new Challenger Tier to replace the existing Top 500 system, a long-standing mainstay of the franchise. Today, OW2 Lead Developer Aaron Keller released a developer blog announcing the rollback of some previous changes and confirming what players can expect next.

Season 20 overview & recap: Overall, the Director’s Take recaps Season 20 additions—including hero Vendetta, the Winter Event, the new Challenger system, and a revised console aim assist—while setting the stage for major updates coming in 2026.
Challenger system changes: Blizzard acknowledges early issues with Challenger Score tuning, leaderboard prestige, and bugs; next season will weight rank more heavily, better highlight the Heat Bonus, factor Champion queue times, and rename leaderboards back to Top 500 while keeping the Challenger system.
Console aim assist response: The new aim assist system was introduced too abruptly; some changes have been reverted, and players will be able to choose between the new system and a legacy aim assist option next season.
Winter Event feedback: Cookie rewards were confusingly presented and too tied to event modes; future events will better communicate how rewards are earned and avoid forcing players into specific modes.
Open Queue and 6v6 outlook: Blizzard is not abandoning Open Queue or 6v6, but is carefully studying player motivations and usage data before committing to changes, with plans to experiment and expand support in the future.

In a Weekly Recall developer blog released in late 2025, developers laid out the groundwork for a new Challenger Tier that would replace the current Top 500 system, which has since been renamed back to Top 500.

Top 500 becomes Challenger Tier: The Top 500 leaderboard is replaced by the Challenger Tier, featuring a new Challenger Score system, role-, region-, mode-, and Stadium-specific leaderboards, and no more two-week wait to appear on the boards.
Challenger Score drives ranking: Wins above Diamond 5 (or All-Star 5 in Stadium) grant Challenger Score, losses deduct 33% of potential gains, and harder matches reward more points; Combined Scores sum performance across roles and modes.
Clear eligibility requirements: Players must meet minimum Challenger Score thresholds, complete the Seasoned Competitor challenge, maintain Endorsement Level 2+, and (for Stadium) win 25 games to qualify for leaderboards.
Season-long competition encouraged: A weekly Heat Bonus increases Challenger Score gains by 5% each week, up to 40%, ensuring leaderboard spots must be defended all season rather than locked in early.
Visibility, rewards, and future updates: Challenger Scores are highly visible, vetted creators can link live streams directly from leaderboards, rewards are coming later, and more enhancements are planned for 2026 and beyond.
