The Overwatch 2019 Summer Games are back and making big waves yet again. Along with another batch of great new skins, the event also signals the return of one of the Overwatch communities favorite events: Copa Lucioball.
The competitive Lucioball mode requires players to do 10 placement matches, just like the standard Competitive mode does. After those 10 matches, players get a rank and can begin earning points towards a golden weapon. For many, this is reason enough to endure through the placement matches. For others, Lucioball is a welcome escape from the standard style of OW.
Another perk of ranked play comes in the penalization of players who quit the match early. This riddles casual games of Lucioball, especially when a players team gets down two or three goals. Keeping people accountable to stay in matches should produce higher quality games and keep the full six players in the lobby for the entirety of the match.

Even outside of playing this mode out of a love for Lucioball, it is also a quicker and potentially less stressful way for players to work their way through the mini-events that give them skins, player icons and sprays. Winning three, six and nine games nets these rewards to players. This event will span from today, July 16. all the way through August 5, with mini-challenges spersed throughout the nearly month-long span.
The 2019 Summer Games event announcement comes on the eve of some exciting new announcements in the Overwatch League. The 2020 OWL season will feature a variety of changes to the league structure and will have each of the 20 OWL teams hosting 2-5 home games. Be sure and stay tuned for more Summer Games updates as well as more coverage of the evolving news surrounding the OWL.
