The Atlanta Reign made their first move of the offseason by bringing in a new coach for the 2023 season. On Tuesday November 22, the Reign announced that former main tank player Blake “Gator” Scott will serve as the organizations newest head coach. Gator joined the team back in 2019 when the Reign entered the Overwatch League. Gator follows in the footsteps of long-time coach Brad “Sephy” Rajani.
The news comes as a surprise to Atlanta fans, as the Reign ended their 2022 campaign once again in the Grand Finals bracket. Though the team did not reach the finals as they had the year prior, there wasn’t much to indicate a change in head coach was needed. As Gator now takes the reins in Atlanta, the player-turned-coach will have plenty to prove as the league continues to learn and adapt to Overwatch 2.

It’s unclear how much experience Gator has in a coaching role, as he has primarily been a player for the majority of his career. However throughout the last season, Gator rarely saw player as co-tank Xander “Hawk” Domceq took the lead tank duties. During that time Gator most likely grew into a “player-coach” type role, so much so that the front-office believed in him enough to take over for 2023. Gator becomes the latest player to transition into a coaching role, and looks to bring Atlanta back to the Grand Final Championship game.
