The Format

The Overwatch League is going to be split into two major stages instead of the mini-tournaments that the fans have been used to. The season will be the spring and summer stages that lead up to two global LAN events in the Midseason Madness and the Grand Finals.

Spring Stage

North America

The Spring stage will have the Western teams compete in stage qualifiers. These results will determine the seeding going into the stage knockouts and Midseason Madness qualifications. This is fairly similar to what has transpired in the past to qualify for a stage final.

The East

Meanwhile in the East, the seeding is being shaken up a bit. Both the Open Division and Contenders teams will have a series of competitions to figure out who will get to compete with the Overwatch League teams in the tournament.

Regional tournaments of South Korea, Asia Pacific (APAC), and Australia/New Zealand (ANZ) will bring to the competition 12 teams. They will then compete in a Spring Stage Opens concurrently with the round-robin Overwatch League Spring Stage Qualifiers. The top teams of the regional tournaments of the Spring Stage Opens will join the Overwatch League teams for the Spring Stage Knockouts and will determine the qualifiers for the Midseason Madness.

Midseason Madness

In total, the Midseason Madness Global Tournament will have 6 teams compete. This will be 4 teams from North America and 2 from the East region. The tournament will be in a double-elimination format. Of the 4 North American qualifying teams, 2 highest seeded teams will directly get into the Midseason Madness, while the other 2 teams will earn their place in the Knockout Stage. The Eastern 2 teams will qualify through the eastern regional Spring Stage Knockouts. More details will come in the coming weeks about the live event.

Second Half of the Season

The format of the second half of the season will be the same as the Midseason Madness when it comes to the format. This will lead up to the Grand Finals. A change in how the teams will qualify for the Grand Finals was made. It is no longer decided by League points that are earned, but instead by the overall record in regional qualifiers.

Overwatch League Season 6

The Overwatch League throughout the seasons has evolved and grown. This new iteration of the League brings an open ecosystem and integration of T2. More updates will be given at a later date, but after a long drought of news, this is exciting to hear about all the new opportunities and vision of the Overwatch League.
