Overwatch League: Why the Shock’s Supports are Key to Their Success

zenyatta stage one

There’s been a lot of fanfare that has been focused on the Shock’s Tank line, and for good reason. The one-two punch of Matthew “Super” DeLisi and Jay “Sinatraa” Won has been amazing along with solid play from Hyo-bin “ChoiHyoBin”. These players have been lauded as some of the best that OWL has to offer. And it’s hard not to see why. These three are quite possibly the best tank line in the game. But a good tank line is nothing without the proper support. The Shock’s support line sometimes stands in the shadows, but they are instrumental in this team’s success.

Lucio players get the short end of the stick sometimes.

Often times the Lucio (or Mercy depending on the meta) is incredibly important to a teams success. This player is the shotcaller more often than not. But the nature of the hero that they play can make them be forgotten about unless they make a crazy boop.

This should not blind anyone from seeing that Moth is extremely good. An aggressive play style just does not work without a good Lucio player. Moth fits the bill and then some, as he allows both Super and Sinatraa to pull off the insane plays that they always seem to do. The fact that Moth of all people always seems to somehow reign in this insane tank line and make sure that the team stays coordinated should be enough to cement him as one of the best Lucio players in the league.

Min-ki “Viol2t” Park

Viol2t is pretty simple to discuss.

He was lauded as the “Next Jjonak” by many people even before he was signed into the league, and for good reason. It can be hard to see just how excellent a Zenyatta player is during this meta. During DPS metas one can see insane flicks and plays made by some of the best Zen players. That just doesn’t happen as much in a meta like this.

This shouldn’t fool anyone, however; Viol2t is one of the best Zen players in the league. Statistically he was one of the best from the very beginning. The Zen player is an important piece of GOATs these days, as without proper Discord placement it can be very hard to actually kill anything. Viol2t provides this support and then some.

Yeah, yeah, Rascal is technically a DPS player, but GOATs forces DPS players into different roles. As such, Rascal is essentially a support player for the Shock, at least right now.

Rascal has never set the world on fire as Brigitte. He’s definitely good at her. It’s just that its hard to tell what impact a Brigitte player is actually having at times. And Rascal hasn’t created much fanfare on her.

What makes Rascal valuable is his flexibility.

The Shock seemed to somewhat abandon the idea of Baptiste, but for a while Rascal was considered one of the best Baptiste players. The fact that both he and the Shock can seamlessly move between both Baptiste and Brigitte GOATs made them very dangerous, and what, by extension, makes Rascal important to this team.

Conclusion

The Shock’s supports don’t get enough love. Most people know that they are good, but they are often overshadowed thanks to the success of the tank line. They deserve more recognition considering they are a part of the best team in the OWL.
