Overwatch Contenders to be Played on Overwatch 2

Ask around the Overwatch community, and almost unanimously people will say that the Tier 2 scene is vital to the success of the Overwatch League. That’s why when the Overwatch League announced that it would be played on an early version of Overwatch 2, people were scared that Contenders would still be playing Overwatch 1.

Luckily for fans, and the Overwatch League itself, that won’t be the case. On Thursday March 24, the Overwatch Path to Pro announced that Contenders will be playing on Overwatch 2.

With the introduction of Overwatch 2 into the Tier 2 scene comes a few changes to help cultivate the best talent each region. In 2022 the classic format will be put on hold, and each Contenders tournament will be shorter, open-registration style events. The goal for the open-access registration is to allow any prospective talent to make a statement in the new-look Contenders scene.

The best teams from 2021 will still be around. Top teams from 2021 will have direct invites to the new events. The first Contenders Overwatch 2 event will be held after the open beta concludes. Fans can expect the same five regions to compete in the upcoming year as well. The prize pool for the 2022 Contenders season is $1.3 million.

The only remaining question is just how much practice will these players receive in OW2. Players aren’t sure when the PVP beta officially ends, making the future event date a bit hazy. Contenders players are always going with the flow, and this is one more thing to power through.

Most of the info is up in the air, but one thing is for sure – Contenders will be on Overwatch 2.
