The newest expansion team finally releases its name yesterday morning as fans say “Release the Kraken!”. Seattle has settled on their team name, the Seattle Kraken. They also released their logos and colors in an event held at the Climate Pledge Arena, the arena the team is set to play in 2021.
Team Colors
The team colors are based on the seas of Seattle and mythical sea beast the Kraken. The primary color will be a deep sea blue with secondary colors being ice blue, shadow blue, boundless blue and red alert.

“Our colors were inspired by puget sound,” said Heidi Dettmar, the Vice President of Marketing for the Kraken. “Something familiar that will fit in so well with all the other great sports fans in this city, but also something bold and different.”
Team Logo
The team logo will pay homage to the Seattle Metropolitans of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. They became the first United States hockey team to win the Stanley Cup. The Metropolitans defeated the Montreal Canadiens in 1917, months before the existence of the NHL. Like the Metropolitans, the logo will have an “S” but it’ll have a red eye and tentacles to represent the Kraken itself.

“Seattle’s a city with a deep maritime history,” said Ron Francis, the Kraken general manager. “I think this name embodies a connection with the sea and a curiosity of what lies beneath it. It’s a natural tie to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.”
The logo was also designed in partnership with Adidas.
Seattle spent the last 18 months researching and discussing over the team name going over more than 1,200 names and 215,000 fan votes. “At the end of the day, the Kraken consistently rose to the top,” Francis said.
Dettmar also said that “hockey has always been here” and Seattle is “a sleeping giant ready to be awoken”.
Commissioner’s Thoughts
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also made comments regarding the name release for the team. “The jersey design is terrific and I can’t wait to see NHL players wear the unique and distinctive ‘S’ on their chests on opening night; it will have special meaning for Seattle hockey fans,” Bettman said. “I’m thrilled to welcome the Seattle Kraken into the National Hockey League.”
The Kraken will donate all of their net sale proceeds from their merchandise to local nonprofits in the Seattle area. YouthCare, Community Passageways and the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle are all going to benefit from the profits made by Kraken merchandise.
