San Jose Sharks Served Late Loss In Ottawa

Publish Date: January 15, 2024

On Saturday the San Jose Sharks were defeated with five seconds to go in the third period against the Ottawa Senators.

Saturday’s game followed the Sharks win against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday that broke a 12-game losing streak.

The Game

The Sens’ Claude Giroux opened up scoring in the first period at 4:12 with assists from Artem Zub and Jake Sanderson. Thomas Chabot took a 2-0 lead with a goal assisted by Vladimir Tarasenko and Tim Stutzle. Anthony Duclair responded for the Sharks with a goal at 12:35 assisted by Alexander Barabanov and Mario Ferraro.

Change in the tide?

The second period had what looked like a change in the tide for Team Teal. Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored at 3:53 with assists from Duclair and Mikael Granlund. Granlund is on a three-game point streak, all assists.

This broke a 60-game goalless dry spell for Vlasic who last scored on Jan 1, 2023. The veteran Vlasic has just 2 points in 21 games played for the season.

On the Vlasic goal, Duclair said, “I just saw him [Vlasic] in the corner of my eye there. I was about to actually one-time it, but I decided to give it up and give Pickles there an open net instead.”

Duclair picked up two points for his goal and an assist in the loss.

Minutes later, Kevin Labanc also broke a goalless spell of 12 games at 6:20. Ferraro and Mike Hoffman picked up assists on the goal. Ferraro logged three points for his assists in the matchup.

Postgame, head coach David Quinn said, “It’s nice to see anybody score but certainly guys that haven’t scored in awhile. It’s good to see those guys get on the scoresheet.”

The Sharks’ had a tie game when Brady Tkachuk responded at 7:11 with a goal assisted by Drake Batherson and Stutzle.

Ottawa’s Batherson brought the game to 4-3 with assists from Zub and Stutzle at 12:59.

Late in the third period Team Teal’s Filip Zadina tied the game with a goal assisted by Tomas Hertl and Ferraro.

It looked like the Sharks would be taking the match into overtime hockey until the Senators scored one more at 19:55. Vladimir Tarasenko sealed the deal with Zub and Stutzle picking up more assists.

The end

The Sharks were outshot more than doubly at 41-18.

Quinn told the press, “I thought our puck play we really struggled. Just weren’t really many areas that we were real efficient in tonight.”

In Buffalo and Chicago the Sharks will look to improve playing the full 60 minutes with a higher level of compete.

“There wasn’t a lot of anticipation in our game. You add that up and you get the game that we got tonight,” Quinn said.

Injury Updates

Ty Emberson suffered an undisclosed injury in Toronto and is considered out week-to-week.

Captain Logan Couture traveled with the team for the road trip but his return date is still not set.

San Jose ends their roadtrip against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. Their next home game will be on Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks.
