The San Jose Sharks picked up two come-from-behind road wins while previously struggling to produce goals. On Thursday the team came back from a 4-0 trail against the Detroit Red Wings before winning it in overtime.
Team Teal’s victory is the first time this season where they were not outshot in their win (36-31).
Centerman Mikael Granlund earned the first star of the game with one goal and two assists.
Alternate captain Tomas Hertl showed impressive effort when he led the comeback to score the first Sharks’ goal at 14:08 in the second.
Fabian Zetterlund followed the captain’s lead with a shorthanded goal at 14:46 to get the Sharks within two.
Minutes later, Niko Sturm scored back-to-back goals to bring the game to a tie. Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Kyle Burroughs, Justin Bailey, and Kevin Labanc picked up assists on the Sturm goals.
13:20 in the third, Detroit’s Dylan Larkin made it 5-4, assisted by Lucas Raymond and Robby Fabbri.
With less than two minutes to go in the third, Hertl tied the game at 5-5. The alternate captain produced nine shots on goal to earn him the third star of the game.
Mackenzie Blackwood started in net before being swapped in the second period for Kaapo Kahkonen. Blackwood made 16 saves in his 33 minutes on the ice, while Kahkonen finished with 10 saves.
Winning it for the Sharks was Mikael Granlund in overtime with 37 seconds to go. Granlund has nine points in the last four games. His goal was assisted by Zetterlund, who has three points in the last four games.
Over the past two games, the Sharks produced 11 goals, more than they did in their first 10 games of the season combined.
While the Sharks have their struggles ahead of them, the recent offensive production shows promise for the team’s buildable future.
Defenseman Matt Benning is out and considered week-to-week with a lower body injury.
