On Tuesday the San Jose Sharks lost their ninth straight game after a 5-3 game against the Detroit Red Wings.
Detroit’s David Sprong opened the scoring with a power play goal at 6:11 in the first period. The power play shot was assisted by Lucas Raymond and Shayne Gostisbehere.
With 4:10 to go in the first, San Jose’s Fabian Zetterlund tied up the game. Mikael Granlund and Mike Hoffman picked up assists on the goal.
The Red Wings opened scoring again at 6:07 in the second with a goal from J.T. Compher. Justin Holl and Olli Maatta assisted.
Late in the second, the Sharks made it a tie when Justin Bailey scored and Mario Ferraro assisted on the goal. Ferraro has five assists in his last five games.
Team Teal’s Alexander Barabanov scored the final Sharks’ goal of the night in the third for a short-lived lead.
Minutes later, Detroit’s David Perron answered with a power play goal to make it 3-3. Perron scored another goal late in the third and Michael Rasmussen’s empty netter secured the Sharks’ loss.
The ninth loss saw the Sharks outshot 31-27, outhit 16-9 and out blocked 29-16. San Jose is consistently outshot, even in their rare wins, but the Sharks were almost double outworked Tuesday.
Kaapo Kahkonen made 26 saves.
The Sharks have one more game in their home-stand versus the Maple Leafs on Saturday.
On Thursday the NHL announced the first 32 players chosen for the 2024 All-Star Game. The league’s pick from the San Jose Sharks was Tomas Hertl. In captain Logan Couture’s absence, Hertl has taken the lead as alternate captain with 28 points in 37 games.
The remaining 12 players selected for the All-Star event will be fan-voted through NHL.com and social media channels.
Toronto will host the three-day event including the teams draft, skills showcase, and game from February 1 through February 3.
The All-Star skills showcase will feature 12 events with the winner awarded a $1 million prize.
Toronto last held the annual game in 2000, and it will be their ninth time playing host.
