The New York Rangers are in the midst of a coaching search and one of their candidates is former New Jersey Devils coach John Hynes.
Hynes’ connection to the Rangers was first reported by the New York Post’s Mollie Walker on Twitter.
In sports, it’s important to pay attention to rivals and what they’re doing. Despite their triumphant series against the Rangers, they remain a threat to the Devils in the metropolitan division. Both teams are set to face each other in the playoffs at least one more time in the near future. It’s not guaranteed that they will, but with the way the metro is shaking up, it appears to be likely.
Furthermore, Hynes has an undefeated record against the Devils while playing against them. Despite his flaws as a coach, he has whatever the secret sauce is to beat them. Hynes is a weak candidate compared to Peter Laviolette, the favorite for the Rangers job before Hynes was fired, but he knows how to beat the Devils.
In short, no. The Rangers’ main goal is to get over the hump. Hynes has yet to make it past the first round of the playoffs. If the Rangers were to hire John Hynes, they’d be taking a step sideways at the very least. From a Devils standpoint, this would be great news.
