NHL Teams to Watch Out for Next Season

Publish Date: July 31, 2023

The NHL roasters are certainly looking different than they did by the end of last season. And there’s four teams in particular that have come on leaps and bounds since then; let’s take a look at them.

Carolina Hurricanes

Already a dominant force in the Metropolitan Division, the Carolina Hurricanes showcased an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement, despite their impressive performance in the previous season. To bolster their already formidable roster, the Hurricanes made a decisive move by signing one of the best forwards available, adding depth to their offensive arsenal.

Not stopping there, the team reinforced their blue line by acquiring Orlov, a top-pairing defenseman, at a reasonable cost. With the addition of Bunting’s tenacity and pest ability, the Hurricanes aim to thrive in high-pressure situations. Moreover, they secured favorable deals to re-sign Jordan Staal and Jesper Fast, further elevating their position.

Though some eyebrows were certainly raised over the decision to retain injury-prone goal tenders Andersen and Raanta, the presence of rising star Pyotr Kochetkov provides a reassuring safety net. Notably, the Hurricanes managed to retain approximately $2.5 million in cap space, potentially leaving room for further upgrades, such as the pursuit of players like Erik Karlsson, whose odds are at +300 to join the team.

New Jersey Devils

Staking their claim as the primary challenger to the Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division, the New Jersey Devils boasted an impressively dominant offense in the previous season. During the off-season, their key focus was to retain their formidable forward corps, a goal they achieved masterfully.

Strategic signings secured max-term extensions for Meier and Bratt at cost-effective rates, highlighting the management’s astuteness. Additionally, the Devils made a savvy move by acquiring Toffoli at a bargain and re-securing the services of Haula. While some players were lost in free agency, their robust prospect pipeline allowed them to fill those gaps with promising talent.

Despite concerns about goaltending, Vitek Vanecek’s solid performance in the previous season and Akira Schmid’s impressive emergence in the playoffs add hope for the Devils. These players are just two of the reasons why sites that list the best options of online sportsbooks show that many bookmakers feel the Devils could be genuine Stanley Cup contenders, often ranking them within the top five at odds of around +900.

Chicago Blackhawks

Though the Chicago Blackhawks may not be immediate playoff contenders next season, with odds of +20,000, they justified their position in the top professional league with their off-season maneuvers.

The acquisition of rising star Connor Bedard to the Blackhawks brought excitement and potential to the roster, making the Blackhawks an intriguing team to watch. While their current defensive depth and offensive options may not inspire complete confidence, Bedard’s presence paves the way for future improvements and sets the stage for a promising rebuild.

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings embarked on a significant quest to elevate their team’s performance from the previous season. The highlight of their off-season activity was the acquisition of offensive powerhouse Alex DeBrincat, providing a considerable boost to their lineup.

The Red Wings’ overall success may hinge on the performances of DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond. If DeBrincat can recapture his 40-goal prowess, and Raymond can regain the form that earned him rookie standout status, the Red Wings could find themselves in a formidable position. However, the team’s emphasis on quantity over marquee signings means they still have areas of improvement to address, with several serviceable players stepping in to fill gaps.

As the NHL off-season progresses, these four teams’ dedication to strengthening their rosters sets the stage for an exciting and competitive season ahead. The culmination of these efforts will determine their standings and aspirations on the ice.
