Jets Extend Barron for Two More Years

Publish Date: July 19, 2023

Morgan Barron signed a two-year, $2.7 million deal on Monday. The 24-year-old Nova Scotia native scored 21 points with the Jets during the 2022-2023 season, his first full season in the NHL.

Barron, a sizable center at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, played 70 games and achieved career-high goals (8), assists (13) and points (21) last season. As part of the Andrew Copp trade – which also led to the Jets drafting Brad Lambert and Elias Salomonsson – the Jets added Barron at the trade deadline in March 2022. Since joining the Jets, Barron has put up 25 points.

Of the extension, Barron told the Winnipeg Free Press’ Mike McIntyre that “[It] just kind of gives you a little bit of a window here, kind of two years to prove myself and prove that I can do more than I have.”

A former sixth-round pick by the New York Rangers in 2017, Barron signed with the Rangers in 2020 after playing collegiate hockey at Cornell University.

2023 Postseason

Barron played in all five games of the Jets’ brief 2023 postseason. In the first game of the series, he notoriously took a blade to the face – off the skate of his now-teammate Laurent Brossoit, who was in net for Las Vegas.

The injury ended up requiring more than 75 stitches. Per McIntyre, Barron has a regimen of creams, acupuncture, and red-light therapy to mitigate his facial scar.

Barron spent much of last season on a line with Mason Appleton and alternate captain Adam Lowry. Though not a highly productive line, the trio was a physical presence and strong third line.
