On Saturday morning the Canadiens acquired Dale Weise and Christian Folin from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for David Schlemko and Byron Froese. The four-player trade sparked interest and excitement among the Canadien fans as they see Weise return to Montreal for a second stint.
Weise, 30, played 152 games for Montreal from 2013-2016. He registered 27 goals and 32 assists with a plus 21. This season with the Flyers he played 42 games and scored 11 points (five goals, six assists). The 30-year-old forward is in his third year of a four-year $9.4 million contract. The age and contract made him a trade candidate for the Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher.
Folin, 27, is due to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. This season he has two assists, is plus five and has 15:33 average ice time in 26 games. He was known to be the seventh defenseman for the Flyers.
Schlemko, 31, is a defenseman that scored two points in 18 games this season with the Canadiens. Last season he came to Montreal from a from an offseason trade with the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Froese, 27, is having a nice season in the American Hockey League with the Laval Rocket scoring 30 points (14 goals,16 assists) in 46 games. He signed with Montreal in the 2017 offseason and is due to be an unrestricted free agent this off-season. Last season he played 48 games, scoring 11 points (three goals, eight assists).
The Flyers are looking to rebuild after a horrible start this season, but they recently got off an eight-game winning streak being 8-1-1 in the last ten games. Philadelphia is expected to be sellers as playoff contenders will be bidding for their star forward Wayne Simmonds. The trade deadline is Feb.25. Stay tuned for more trade news.
