The Anaheim Ducks fell in a high scoring affair with the Blue Jackets 7-4 on Wednesday night.
Columbus was up 4-0 before a four goal second period by the Ducks tied things up. The Jackets would then score three unanswered goals in the final period to secure the win.
It was an army of Blue Jackets pounding the stat sheet, multiple players had multi goal games or multi point games. Zach Werenski had a two goal first period for Columbus. Boone Jenner added a goal and two assists.
Mason McTavish had two goals for the Ducks and Troy Terry added three points. Terry now has 14 points in Anaheim’s last ten games. Pavel Mintyukov added three assists as well.
In their third and final game of a California road trip the Blue Jackets entered the Honda Center looking to take home their second win of the trip. The Kings had put the hammer on them 5-1 at Staples Center just the night before.
Scoring was not an issue for Columbus Wednesday. Zach Werenski opened the scoring with a deflected shot at 3:32. Then the red hot Johnny Gaudreau added his second point of the night with a wrister at 9:32. Werenski closed off the period with another goal ending the first period with a 3-0 Blue Jackets lead.
The second period started with another Columbus goal, this time it was Sean Kuraly tipping in a shot past John Gibson who had a rough night allowing six goals on just 29 shots.
Then Troy Terry and Mason McTavish would rally the Ducks into things. The last 11 minutes of the second period would see the Ducks muscle their way back. A Troy Terry wrister made things 4-1. Then Mason McTavish would score goals 16 and 17 on the season less than three minutes apart. Then with just 24 seconds left in the period an Alex Killorn wrist shot would tie the game.
Unfortunately for Anaheim their comeback would fall short. The Blue Jackets offense came roaring back. Yegor Chinakhov had the game winner with his tip-in shot. Sean Kuraly added the insurance, and Blue Jacket captain Boone Jenner sealed it with an empty netter for a 7-4 win for the Jackets.
The Ducks had done enough to win the game. They beat the Jackets in shots, hits, penalty minutes, and faceoff percentage. However, they did not take care of the puck, giving it away to the Blue Jackets ten times, one of which led directly to a Jackets goal.
With Anaheim winning the two teams earlier meeting this season they will split the season series.
Gibson was not himself in net, however careless turnovers seemed to be the main reason for the Ducks defeat.
Next for the Ducks is the rival L.A. Kings in a Freeway Faceoff rivalry game at Staples Center. You can catch the action Saturday at 10:30 P.M. EST 7:30 P.M. PST on BSW, BSSC, BSSD, and NHL Power Play on ESPN+.
