The New Jersey Devils have reportedly re-signed veteran forward Erik Haula to a 3-year, $9.4 million deal on Friday.
ESPN’s Kevin Weekes first reported that the two sides were closing in on a deal.
The team made it official shortly thereafter.
Haula, 32, had 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 80 games in the 2022-23 season for New Jersey. He also had 6 points in 12 playoff games, all coming in their 7-game series win against the New York Rangers.
He came over to the Devils in a trade with the Boston Bruins last offseason that sent the controversial Pavel Zacha to Boston with Erik Haula coming to New Jersey.
Haula provided what Zacha mostly didn’t. He was a stable top-9 option who could slide up and down the lineup. He won 54.2% of his faceoffs and he was a frequent penalty killer. Furthermore, he appeared to work well with Jack Hughes. However, he did have issues with finishing scoring chances.
During exit interviews, Haula made it clear to GM Tom Fitzgerald that he wanted to stay in New Jersey. It appears that he got his wish.
