The New Jersey Devils are in the market for a goaltender according to TSN’s Elliotte Friedman but they’re already fine as it is.
The main name here is Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck. If the Devils were to acquire a goaltender who would take them to the next level, it would be him.
Hellebuyck is an elite goaltender and the Devils would certainly benefit from him, but the Devils should stick with what they have. It’s easy to get caught up in the rumors, but Akira Schmid and Vitek Vanecek were more than capable last season. Schmid won a playoff series nearly single-handedly. The Swiss netminder is only 23 years old. He had a .922 save percentage in the regular season and a .921 save percentage in the playoffs.
The Devils are a very conservative team when it comes to big assets. Tom Fitzgerald’s only big trade was the Timo Meier trade and that was with the long-term in mind. Connor Hellebuyck is on an expiring contract and the Devils need to make room for more young guys who need paydays. These players include Dawson Mercer, Akira Schmid, Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec. It’d be wise for the Devils to stick with Schmid and Vanecek if they’re building for the long term.
