Connor McDavid hasn’t played professional hockey for a long time, but out on the ice, it seems as if he’s a veteran.
He has only been a part of the Edmonton Oilers for six years, but it looks like he’s a well-seasoned NHL star who has been playing for 16.
Who is Connor McDavid?
McDavid was drafted 1st overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers. Since then, the Canadian hockey superstar has won the Art Ross Trophy three times, the Hart Memorial Trophy, and the Ted Lindsay Award twice.
At this point, McDavid has made plenty of positive contributions for his team, even though the Oilers may not be in the playoffs at the moment.
For example, in 2016, McDavid contributed to his team by registering his first career hat-trick against the Dallas Stars. This was good news for both him and his team, as the Oilers went on to win that game 5-2.
In addition, McDavid became the Oilers’ team captain in 2016, making him the youngest captain in the NHL. He was just 19 years.
McDavid also recorded his 100th career point in late 2016, scoring 30 goals and recording 70 assists.
All of McDavid’s hard work and efforts didn’t go unnoticed by the Oilers. He is a key player the team needs to keep on the roster for as long as possible.
McDavid signed a $100 million, eight-year extension contract with the Oilers in 2017. This ensures that he will be a part of the team until 2025.
McDavid’s future with the Oilers
McDavid has four more good years left with the Oilers until his contract expires. Additionally, there is a strong possibility that he will be resigned again by then. He will be just 28-years old in 2025, meaning he still has plenty of years left in the tank.
If McDavid signs another extension contract after 2025, both he and the team will be in good shape for the future. He can be considered a core player for the team.
McDavid’s future looks pretty bright with the team. He completed the 2020-21 season with 33 goals and 72 assists, totaling 105 points to wrap up the season.
In addition to McDavid, there are a handful of other players who will be able to work perfectly on the Oilers’ team. They have already proven this in the past.
Dylan Holloway, for instance, was drafted 14th overall in 2020. He played through plenty of injuries, but despite this, he has many different skills that the Oilers are looking for.
In conclusion, the offseason and forthcoming season will be an interesting one for the Oilers. They have McDavid, in addition to many top players, to help them be successful. So, it will be interesting to see how the next season goes for the team.
