The Boston Bruins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in double overtime in Game 1 of the First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a score of 4-3. This game was originally scheduled to be played on Aug. 12 but was postponed due to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets going to five overtimes in Game 1. Here is the recap between the Bruins and Hurricanes.
Both teams are evenly matched heading into this series but the Hurricanes were the first team to get the series’ first goal. Hurricanes defenseman Joel Edmundson scored with 6:58 left in the period. However, the Bruins were able to gain momentum back and tied the game. Bruins forward David Pastrnak scored the tying goal with 2:!5 left in the period.
The game was tied at one heading into the second period.
The game intensified with both teams getting great scoring chances. Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk hit the post on a 3-on-1 breakaway that would’ve given his team their first lead. But, Bruins forward Charlie Coyle scored a goal to get the team’s first lead with 15:22 left in the period. The Hurricanes challenged the goal for goaltender interference only to lose it and go on a penalty kill. However, Hurricanes forward Brock McGinn tied the game shorthanded. McGinn scored 21 seconds after Coyle’s goal.
The game was tied at two heading into the third period.
Bruins forward David Krejci gave his team the lead 59 seconds into the period but it was mostly the Hurricanes who controlled most of this period. And, all of the Hurricanes hard work paid off as defenseman Haydn Fleury tied the game again with 10:11 left in the game. Though the Bruins were outshot 12-7 this period, they were able to keep the game tied.
The game was tied at three heading into overtime.
This is only just the second game in all of the first round playoff matches to go into overtime.
The Bruins took control of this overtime but weren’t able to convert on any of their scoring chances. The Hurricanes also couldn’t find a goal this period either. The best chance to win the game came from Bruins forward Chris Wagner with 10:39 left in the period.
The game was still tied at three heading into double overtime.
This would be the last period of the game rather than having to watch five overtime periods from Game 1 between the Lightning and Blue Jackets. Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron shot blocker side on Hurricanes goaltender Peter Mrazek to end the game 1:13 into double overtime.
Boston won the game 4-3 and took the series lead 1-0.
Three Stars of the Game
Third Star: David Pastrnak (1 goal, 1 assist)
Second Star: Joel Edmundson (1 goal)
First Star: Patrice Bergeron (1 goal, 1 assist)
Both teams can play both ends of the ice effectively and efficiently. This should make this series one of the more interesting ones to look out for as the first round progresses through. This game gave Boston its first win since the NHL came back to play. They lost all three of their games in the round robin going down from the top seed to the fourth seed in the east.
The Hurricanes are coming off a sweep series against the New York Rangers during the qualifying rounds and didn’t seem to look back since that series ended. They’re also looking to get back at Boston after the Bruins swept the Hurricanes in the second round of last year’s playoffs.
Game 2 of the Bruins-Hurricanes series is on Aug. 13 at 8:00 pm EST.
