The Minnesota Wild have promoted General Manager Bill Guerin to President of Hockey Operations. Wild Owner Craig Leipold announced the decision in a slew of moves Tuesday morning. Other moves included promotions for both Matt Majka and Mitch Helgerson.
Guerin came on as Minnesota Wild General Manager prior to the 2019-2020 season. After a tumultuous 14 month run with Paul Fenton as GM, Guerin has brought stability to the organization. Molding the team after his image, the Wild have become a tough and talented team that can be a headache to play against.
Unafraid to make big splashes, Guerin’s tenure is highlighted by the buyouts of franchise staples Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, the trade for future Hall of Famer Marc Andre Fleury, and the extension of superstar Kirill Kaprizov. Despite making the playoffs each season under Guerin’s watch, the Wild have been unable to advance past the first round.
The ultimate goal of a Stanley Cup celebration in St. Paul should become much more attainable after the massive buyout cap hits of Parise and Suter end on July 1, 2025.
With the addition of the title President of Hockey Operations, Guerin will retain his General Manager title. Basically, nothing will change with the promotion. Everything on the hockey side of things will still run through Guerin.
The move cements him as the franchise’s leader for the foreseeable future. Leipold expressed his pleasure with Guerin’s tenure and the move prevents other NHL teams from enticing him with a title change.
In addition to the Guerin’s promotion, Matt Majka and Mitch Helgerson also received title changes. Majka, who was serving as the President and Alternate Governor, was promoted to CEO of Minnesota Sports and Entertainment (MSE).
MSE includes the Minnesota Wild, Iowa Wild and Saint Paul Arena Company (SPAC), the manager and operator of Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul RiverCentre, Roy Wilkins Auditorium, TRIA Rink, Herbie’s On The Park and 317 On Rice Park. Helgerson, who has been with the organization for 18 years, was most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Broadcasting. Helgerson was promoted to Chief Revenue Officer of the team.
