Will the Chiefs be able to shut down Jonathan Taylor?

Publish Date: September 20, 2022

The Kansas City Chiefs will travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Colts offense has been lackluster so far, but they still have the best running back in the league with Jonathan Taylor. Will the Chiefs be able to shut Jonathan Taylor down in this Chiefs vs. Colts matchup?

Stout Run Defense

We are only two weeks into the 2022 NFL Season but the Chiefs defense has appeared to make tremendous strides since last season.

So far this season the Chiefs have yet to allow a single 50 yard rusher in a game. The closest player to get to 50 yards against the Chiefs would be Austin Ekeler who had 14 rushes for 39 yards. The next closest would be Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray who rushed for 29 yards.

With that being said Kansas City has yet to play a run first team. With the Colts abysmal performance in week 2 it is safe to say that they will rely on their star running back Jonathan Taylor early on in this matchup.

Last week the Colts failed to find any rhythm at all. Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan threw three interceptions against the Jaguars while Taylor rushed for 54 yards on only 9 attempts. In order for the colts to play their best on offense, they need to rely on the running game.

This will be the key matchup for the Chiefs in week 3. Can their run defense slow down or halt the talented Jonathan Taylor.

Will the Colts even be able to run?

One reason that the Colts didn’t run the ball as much as they should of in week 2, is the fact that they were playing catch up. Playing catch-up is the worst nightmare for running football teams.

The Chiefs will most likely get off to a fast start against the Colts forcing the team to quickly answer threw their passing game. Also, The Colts’ passing game has yet to flourish threw two weeks as newly acquired Matt Ryan has looked like a downgrade from former Colts quarterback Carson Wentz.

The key to get the rushing game going for Indianapolis is to control the clock and play great defense against one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL. Furthermore, Taylor needs to find a way to be the X-factor of this game.

The Chiefs are highly favorited in this Chiefs vs. Colts matchup, will the Colts be able to find their identity and make this into a close game?
