The Los Angeles Chargers were in a comfortable spot going into the 2023 NFL draft with no extreme needs except for depth/speed WRs. This opened the door for choosing the best available player, instead of reaching for a position of need.
Tuli Tuipulotu, pass rusher out of USC, was the perfect example of this, as the Chargers already had a seemingly stacked defensive line unit going into next season before the draft.
2022 Chargers Defensive Struggles
The 2022 Chargers had many star players out for a long stretch, such as elite edge rusher Joey Bosa. Without Bosa, the Chargers struggled to get consistent pass rush, with Khalil Mack having to carry the squad’s defensive line pressure.
Along with the injury to Bosa, the interior defensive line was a major problem. Multiple starters in the interior were injured, leading to last minute transactions like Breiden Fehoko having to be the premier run stopper for the end of the season and into the playoffs.
How Tuli will fit in the 2023 Team
Tuli gives versatility for the 2023 squad as he is 291 pounds and primarily a power rusher which allows him to be played as an edge off the bench, or in the interior which the Chargers desperately need.
The 2023 Chargers team is full of playmakers now on offensive and defensive. What is unique about this Chargers team more than any other in recent memory is the amount of depth throughout the roster.
Injuries are a part of the game that is unavoidable, as Charger fans know all too well, which is why depth is so important late in the season. Tuli gives versatility to Brandon Staley’s complex defense that makes the 2023 bolts an even more of a serious threat in the AFC than they were before.
