Wide receiver Marquez Valdez-Scantling has had a successful career so far with the Green Bay Packers. The Chiefs added Valdez-Scantling to their new-look receiver core this offseason.
Past Performance
Marquez Valdez-Scantling was drafted by Green Bay in the 2018 NFL Draft. Ever since entering the league, he had an instant impact on the field. For the past four seasons, Valdez-Scantling mainly was the third passing option in Green Bay’s offense and averaged about 500 receiving yards per season. In 2020 he had his best season yet with 690 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. During the 2020 season, Valdez-Scantling showed his ability to be a possible number two option as he was a big red-zone threat for Aaron Rodgers.
This past season Valdez-Scantling’s numbers were down due to injury. In just 11 games Valdez-Scantling recorded 430 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He was on pace to replicate his performance in 2020 or possibly surpass it. Taking the injury into account Valdez-Scantling has improved in every season since becoming a professional. And with a quarterback swap between Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, it’s safe to say he is in good hands.
Role on the Chiefs
Valdez-Scantling has a great chance at being the second outside receiver in this offense. Along with JuJu Smith-Schuster, they are the two bigger receivers to play on the outside currently on the Chiefs roster. Although he may still be option number four or five in the passing game. Mecole Hardman will most likely be the slot receiver this season but he still has a more developed relationship with Mahomes than Valdez-Scantling. Also, Travis Kelce is planning on being selected to the All-Pro team once again and will be the number one option in this offense.
Valdez-Scantling fits very well into this air-raid scheme, however. He has been in this type of offense his whole professional career. It will also help Mahomes out tremendously to have another bigger receiver over the middle. Expect him to be used in many over-the-middle patterns and during third and mediums.
Review
The addition of Marquez Valdez-Scantling will be a very valuable addition to the Chiefs’ offense. He is another piece to help out with the loss of Tyreek Hill and adds tremendous value in the red zone and on third down. Valdez-Scantling is a young improving receiver who has yet to peak in his NFL career. Mahomes will appreciate the value and talent that he brings to the team in distributing the talent evenly for the receivers. I would expect Valdez-Scantling to have a big season with 650-750 receiving yards and 5-7 touchdowns. He also has breakout potential. The opposing defenses have enough to worry about with the other players on the Chiefs offense.
