San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance will receive season-ending surgery. He suffered an ankle injury in Week 2’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, and was carted off of the field. Jimmy Garappolo will take the reins at quarterback for the rest of the season.
The NFL’s official Twitter account reported that head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the season-long absence on Sunday.
The Niners’ quarterback position was the topic of much discussion during the offseason. Shanahan and the franchise clearly wanted to move onto their third overall drafted quarterback, Lance, but still owed Garoppolo money on his contract. They ultimately decided to rework Garoppolo’s contract, making him the highest-paid backup in the NFL.
In his two games this season, Lance had 15 completions on 31 attempts for 194 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed 16 times for 67 yards. Garoppolo completed the win over Seattle after jumping in, throwing for 154 yards and one touchdown.
