Free-agent running back Todd Gurley is returning to the state where he played college football, as he agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons according to Jordan Schultz.
The Los Angeles Rams released him on Thursday, which prevented them from paying his $10.5 million guaranteed salary for the 2020 season.
Gurley is a three-time Pro Bowler who is just 25 years old, but he has slowed down over the last year and a half with arthritis in his knee. He has rushed for 5,404 yards and 58 touchdowns in his career. Last season, he rushed for 857 yards, the lowest mark of his career.
Earlier in the week, the Falcons cut Devonta Freeman, which created a need at the running back position. With the one-year deal, Gurley can show that arthritis in his knee won’t be a problem and that he can still produce. If he can’t, the Falcons will likely bring him back on a smaller salary or let him walk following the season.
