Bears preseason football kicks off this Saturday, August 12, vs the Tennessee Titans. The upcoming has Bears fans excited to watch some football. Bears fans need to know these notable pieces of information to prepare for the game.
On Wednesday, Bears Coach Matt Eberflus told reporters that select starters will play on a snap count against the Titans. One of the starters that Eberflus confirmed will be playing is quarterback Justin Fields. Playing on a snap court benefits Fields by allowing him to get live game reps with starters while lowering injury probability. Getting live game reps helps build more chemistry and ensure alignments are correct so fewer mistakes are made in the regular season.
On the other hand, the Titans typically do not play many veterans in the preseason. This means they will be playing some younger starters and backups. It will be interesting to see how well these players can defend Fields.
The Bears have a long list of player injuries leading into their first preseason game of 2023.
Over half the players that may miss Saturday games are starters. Normally starters missing preseason games is not a big deal but leading into an important season for the Bears missing players hurts. Starters missing time means they have fewer game reps to mesh as a team. The fewer game reps the starters have together may create disorganized plays in the regular season. The effects of this will be easier to see on the offensive side of the ball since it is more complex. Chase Claypool and Nate Davis being hurt during this preseason game means the starters may look clunky because they are not at full strength
On the other hand, defensive starters missing the first preseason game is not as big of a deal. This is because many of these defensive starters may not play anyways. Due to the more serious position battles going on with the defense. One of these battles is between rookies Tyrique Stevenson and Tarell Smith. Smith potentially missing the first preseason game due to injury hurts his possibility of being a starter. This is because Smith losses a chance to show what he looks like in NFL game action. Having one less game f evaluation may lock Stevenson in at the number two cornerback position.
As for the Titans, they do not seem to have any injuries leading into preseason week one. Having no injuries will allow the Titans to play freely.
The Titans’ assistant head coach/ defensive line coach Terrell Williams will act as the head coach for the game against the Bears. Williams handling the duties for a game provides a great opportunity for him. to show other teams what he is like as a head coach. This opportunity can serve as a launching pad for him to get head coaching offers.
