What to know:
This year’s Super Bowl is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. EST and 4:30 p.m. local time. It will be televised in the United States nationally on Fox with Kevin Burkhardt (play-by-play), Greg Olson (analyst), and Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi as the sideline reporters.
How the Eagles got there:
The Eagles enter Sunday’s Super Bowl with a 14-3 record after winning the NFC East behind third-year quarterback Jalen Hurts. Behind Hurts, the Eagles have won 16 of his last 17 starts dating, their lone loss in that time period coming to the Washington Commanders during the regular season. The Eagles only other two losses during the season came to the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints with backup quarterback Gardner Minshew starting.
Hurts, one of this year’s finalists for the NFL MVP completed 66% of his passes for over 3,700 yards and 22 touchdowns on top of 736 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. Hurts took great advantage of having one of the best offenses in the league built around wide receivers A.J Brown and DeVonta Smith as well as tight end Dallas Goedert and running back Miles Sanders. You can’t talk about the Eagles without mentioning their offensive line, the best in the NFL. Three of the Eagles five starting offensive lineman were named Pro Bowl starters in Landon Dickerson, Lane Johnson, and Jason Kelce.
The Eagles are not only an offensive juggernaut but are also great on the defensive side of the ball, allowing the second fewest yards in the league while recording over 70 sacks on the season including four players with 10+ sacks.
In the playoffs, the Eagles took care of business without much worry, tearing apart the New York Giants 38-7 before defeating the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game 31-7.
How the Chiefs got there:
The Chiefs, on the other hand, also recorded a 14-3 record during the regular season, winning the AFC West on top of being the AFC’s No.1 seed. Despite trading away star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs were still able to put together the NFL’s highest scoring offense during the regular season. Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to win the league MVP after throwing for over 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns. Despite not having Hill, the Chiefs still have names such as tight end Travis Kelce, wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdez-Scantling as well as emerging running back Isiah Pacheco.
In the playoffs, the Chiefs defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round 27-20 before defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship 23-20 on a late field goal by kicker Harrison Butker.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that the only one former New England Patriot is playing in this year’s Super Bowl, that being Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Joe Thuney. The 30-year old Thuney played with the Patriots from 2016 to 2020 before joining the Chiefs In 2021. A member of the Patriots All-Dynasty team and All-2010s team, Thuney joined the Chiefs on a five-year, $80 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Another note to pass along is that it will be the first matchup between two brothers who are players on the field in the Chiefs Travis Kelce and the Eagles Jason Kelce. It will also be the first Super Bowl matchup that features two black starting quarterbacks.
Rihanna set to perform the halftime show:
For the first time in over half a decade, pop star Beyonce will perform live as she’ll be this year’s halftime show. The Barbadian singer is one of the best selling musical artists of all time, selling over 250 million, she’s also won nearly 200 awards over her musical career. The performance coincides with the start of a sew stadium tour that has yet to be announced but expected to begin later this year.
