Sean Payton has informed the New Orleans Saints that he is stepping away according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Payton, 58, has been the head coach in New Orleans since the 2006 season. He has posted a 152-89 record over his 15 seasons with the team (Payton missed the 2012 season as part of the “Bountygate” suspension).
His 2009 team won the Super Bowl, which was the first in franchise history. He is credited with giving the city a winning team shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.
Before getting the head coaching job in New Orleans, Payton spent time as an assistant with the Eagles, Giants, Cowboys and at several colleges before making the jump to the NFL.
The Saints will have a later jump on interviewing head coach candidates than the other teams in the market. They will have to find a new coach and work out some of their cap issues, as they are projected to be well over the cap in 2022.
