Saquon Barkley and the Giants are still too far apart on a long-term deal ahead of the 4:00pm ET deadline, according to reports. Now that the deadline has passed, Barkley will have to play on the one-year franchise tag.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
Being that Barkley is now essentially locked into the franchise tag, he has a few options. He could play on the tag for the full season, hold out and refuse to play (a la Le’Veon Bell), or come back to the field later in the season to try and preserve his health ahead of another offseason contract year.
Barkley had the most yards he’s ever had on the ground last year, with 1,312 in 16 games. He also had the second-most rushing touchdowns in his career, at 10. The last time his numbers were this good was during his rookie season, which was his only other non-injury plagued season.
