The Philadelphia Eagles flew to victory by a score of 21-20 against the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday in their second preseason game. This game saw many great performances from a proven veteran quarterback to a young receivers trying to make the team. Furthermore, this game showed that the Eagles are working on getting the passing game on track while still sticking with their bread and butter from last year; their running attack. This article will take you through a full recap of the Eagles victory on Sunday.
Gardner Minshew was Impressive
Jalen Hurts sat out in this game, which gave the start to Gardner Minshew who should be the Eagles’ second string quarterback at the beginning of the season. Minshew really looked great during this start. He was accurate and gave his receivers opportunities to make catches. He completed 82.4 percent of his passes with his longest pass being 24 yards. He also had 142 yards passing with no touchdown passes or interceptions. Philadelphia scored on the ground for the time he was behind center.
Reid Sinnett played in the second half of the game. He completed four of his nine passes which was good for 69 yards. He did complete a long touchdown pass which was probably the highlight of his time on the field. Sinnett has not set the world on fire this preseason, but he is also young and does not have the experience on the field. It is up in the air whether the Eagles will have two or three quarterbacks on the roster but three is safer than two in case of injuries.
Rest of the offense
Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell both looked good in this game. They were both quick and found holes within the line of scrimmage. Scott broke off some big runs at the beginning of the game which gave the Eagles a lot of momentum going forward. However, Gainwell did produce a little more than Scott. He had 46 yards and one touchdown while Scott had 33 and one touchdown.
One of the big stories of the game was the receivers. Two Eagles receivers had games that people did not expect. Deon Cain was the leading receiver with 66 yards, which wouldn’t have been a lot of people’s first guess. Cain was reliable he caught five of his seven targets. He showed he has great hands and that he can come down with some tough passes. He could have possibly made the team with that performance; however, it could also take another good performance in the Eagles last preseason game against the Dolphins. Another young receiver who made a big play in Devon Allen. He is a rookie and has made headlines being an Olympian track athlete. He caught a 55-yard touchdown pass and showed his blazing speed in the process. It will be interesting what the Eagles decide to do with Allen in the future.
The Eagles defense struggled
The Eagles defense did not set the world on fire in this game. However, a lot of the starters did not play much. The Browns’ racked up 403 total yards on the Eagles in game. They gave up 229 yards through the air and 174 yards on the ground. They also failed to force any turnovers, nor did they get a sack. Getting sacks was a problem last year but hopefully they will get that straight this year. Josh Jobe was the leading tackler in this game with seven total tackles. He has looked good all through training camp and preseason. Furthermore, Ugo Amadi, who is the Eagles newest safety produced four tackles. Lastly, Nakobe Dean had another solid game with three tackles. The Eagles will need improve defensively in their next game against the Dolphins which this coming Saturday at 7 PM.
