The Carolina Panthers have fired their head coach. Matt Rhule, who has led the Panthers to a 1-4 start through five games, has been fired amid rumors that he was the coach on the hottest seat in the entire league.
ESPN’s official Twitter account reported the news on Monday morning.
Rhule was brought in to be the Panthers head coach in January of 2020 after a long tenure in the college football ranks. He had been the Baylor Bears head coach for three seasons most recently before earning his first NFL head coaching gig.
During his three seasons as Carolina’s coach, Rhule went just 11-27. In 2020, the team went 5-11, in 2021 they earned a record of 5-12 (after starting 3-0). After this year’s inauspicious start, Steve Wilks will take over head coaching duties. He was the Cardinals’ head coach in 2018, going 3-13 in his only year there.
